Coles, Woolworths and Aldi snags have gone head-to-head to answer the age-old question once and for all: Who has the best democracy sausage?

Leading consumer advocacy group Choice has compared several aspects of traditional beef sausages from Australia’s most popular supermarkets, and there was a very clear winner.

With an impressive 51 per cent of votes, Coles sausages were picked as the clear favourite with Aldi coming in second, and Woolworths placing third.

In a report of their findings, Choice wrote that “the golden ratio for a perfect sausage is 80 per cent meat to 20 per cent fat”, noting that each contender’s sausages had their own ratio-related characteristics.

Coles almost hit the target for meat content, with tests showing that it fell short of the “ideal” 20 per cent fat. But it’s slightly higher salt content won over the judges, with 725mg of sodium per 100g.

Silver medallist Aldi was found to sell the cheapest snag of the bunch, but judges were put-off by the packaging’s assertion that the snags contain “beef, lamb or chicken”. Aldi sausages were also found to have 21.4 grams of fat per 100g.

Woolworths’ third-place ranking was earned due to the lowest meat and sodium content of the bunch, while also having the lowest percentage of Aussie ingredients compared to its competitors.

Coles sausages are made with 96 per cent Aussie ingredients, while Aldi sausages contain 97 per cent Aussie ingredients.

Coles boasts snag win

Category Manager for Barbecue and Local Ranging Aliette Errington said that Coles is proud to have been named as the Best Democracy Sausage.

“No matter how you choose to vote this weekend, we know the one thing Aussies can agree on is that Coles offers the best democracy sausage, taking out the top spot in the Choice People’s Choice poll!,” Ms Errington said.
